words to.. design by..

as an artist, expose yourself
don't over analyze... let it be organic... fashion needs to breathe
don't be told what the 'trends' are... create your vision
be true to yourself and client. don't forget your vision and what your client wants
challenge your client, but make it suitable for them
balance of art and client... an obsession
every season... every collection... is a miracle
time... patience... work. work. work. work. work. work.
words from designers claude and brian of ruffian

29 years later...

i found myself in an elevator today with an older woman at the 1st floor. the elevator rose and she sighed. "just another day" i said. she looked up and nodded. we reached the 9th floor, before she got off, she looked behind to me and said... "29 years later and still the same thing..."

the doors closed and i felt a rush... a wonder: what will i be saying to a young woman in an elevator in 29 years...
i hope it is a sigh full of hope...

the trade off

launching and designing my line in chicago has been incredible. the people, the opportunities, and the resources... i wake up in the morning and run along the lake shore and i feel alive... that isn't to say that i am complete...
received by my mother in the morning i am reminded by what i am giving up while running around the city... the clear misty fog mornings where the land becomes merely a stage to the color wave sky...
in life "there are no solutions... there are only trade-offs"

never lost

last night... alone, under the stars, my father found me, and together, with his help, i found the north star for the first time...

i have spent years searching for this star... trying over and over... and now i have found the nordic star. the one in the sky that never moves or leaves... it is always there to guide us home and help us find our direction.
most of the time we feel lost. scared of the unknown. afraid to forge ahead... but sometimes, you look up, see the north star, and find comfort in knowing there is always something in the sky that is constant in our journey... and if your lucky, really lucky, you will see a shooting star out of the corner of your eye...

just another spring day

after a long day coming back to my neighborhood i decided to hop off the bus, walk toward the lake, and take in the spring air before our brief taste of spring leaves with the snow tomorrow...

i couldn't help but notice couples all around looking out into the vast mass of water and be reminded of a poem...
There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but Nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the Universe, and feel
What I can ne'er express, yet cannot all conceal.

little teaser...

an early spring day... a fine misty sky casting a cloth over everything... a model on hand and spring 10 collection waiting... waiting for the right moment...

the spot was already chosen... deserted bee hive farm on our land far off past the fields and woods... keep a close eye on the m.c.c. website: www.miriamceciliacarlson.com to view the collection pictured in it's element.

until then a look at the treasured location...

change is in the air...

the seasons are changing, spring is teasing w.our senses... now is the time when we are awakened... pulled into the warming air and are able to feel warmth come within... it is a time to live again. given a chance to start over and begin a new journey. just like shafts of green sprouting grass we break through the cold dark ground and expose ourselved to the elements and take on new risks... whether they are stormy summer nights or risky life adventures, embrace the moment of the unknown...
as the snow melts the earth gives out and slides across the forgotten rows of maize...

these pools that, though in forests, still reflect
the total sky almost without defect,
and like the flowers beside them, chill and shiver,
will like the flowers beside them soon be gone,
and yet not out by any brook or river,
but up by roots to bring dark foliage on.
the trees that have it in their pent-up buds
to darken nature and be summer woods --
let them think twice before they use their powers
to blot out and drink up and sweep away
these flowery waters and these watery flowers
from snow that melted only yesterday.
r. frost.
there is hope in the newly barren land... reminded that we are not forgotten and life will live again.

ideas for m.c.c. spring 11 are turning in my heads... but until then enjoy m.c.c. spring 10 coming soon... very soon...

in between worlds.

snow is melting... the world is changing again... soon...first signs of spring are coming... i was reminded by this during an early morning drive leaving the coutnry heading toward the city surrounded by mist.
the earth is uncovered and soon enough life will grow again...
we can only wait... take in the beauty of barren fields...
and leafless branches...
and toss in a little hope for the sky to warm us again...

the new starting point...

"what we call the beginning is often the end. and to make an end is to make a beginning. the end is where we start from."
-t. s. elliot

i sit here on the 11th floor of 111 state st. staring out into lake michigan. it is the 5th day of the incubator and m.c.c. has settled into it's new surroundings...
it has been a whirlwind w.workshops, meet and greets, events, interviews... and it will only get more exciting... w.the launch/cfi to present the new 2010 designer in residents and bid farewell to the 2009 group. after that, m.c.c. and the other lines in the incubator will host the 2010 designer in resident trunk show from 12-8. both events taking place at the 900 n. michgan shops.

lots of changes coming. i am excited to see where this year will take me and m.c.c.
